Whitefish Lake is a beautiful, natural lake situated along the northwest side of town. The lake boasts more than 3,200+ acres of surface area, creating an ideal playground for summertime water sports and recreation.
Whitefish Lake is the perfect place to pursue your summer passions, whether on the water or along the shore. Whether you prefer boating, water skiing, fishing, kayaking, swimming, fly-boarding, or just about anything else you can imagine, you will find Whitefish Lake to be an ideal spot for making the most of your summertime adventures.
At the south-end of Whitefish Lake right along the edge of town, you will find a large sandy beach area called 'City Beach' where you can kick back in your lawn chair, build a sand castle, play some beach volley ball, or just stretch out and get your suntan on. There is also a very large roped-off area for swimming that extends out from the beach where kids and adults alike can swim and cool off in the refreshing waters of Whitefish Lake without being bothered by any boats, jet-skis, or any other distractions.
At the far western end of the beach area there is a (free to the public) concrete boat ramp where you can launch your boat with ease.
Extending out from the opposite side of the sandy City Beach area there is a large grassy park that offers several benches, pavilions, and picnic tables for the public to use and enjoy, along with several nice open spaces for tossing a Frisbee or football, or simply stretching out on a blanket to relax and take in the peaceful beauty and tranquility of the lake and surrounding mountains.
The Big Mountain, home of the Whitefish Ski and Summer Resort, dominates the horizon along the north east side of the lake, and creates a beautiful backdrop to the clear water as the picture-perfect ski runs cast their reflection across the lake surface.
In addition to City Beach with its grassy park area, there are also two other public parks located along the shores of Whitefish Lake. Along the west side of the lake approximately two miles outside of the town of Whitefish you will find the Whitefish Lake state park. Whitefish Lake State Park is a 10 acre park that includes it's own concrete boat launch and a roped off swim area with its own swimming beach consisting of a mix of sand and rock. The state park contains several tent and RV sites as well as a common area with picnic tables and fire rings where anyone is welcome to relax for a while with a picnic lunch or dinner while taking in the beauty of the area. The state park provides some great views of the Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort across the lake as well.
The other public park located along the lake is Les Masons State Park which is located at about mid-point along the north east shoreline at the foot of Big Mountain. Les Masons State Park is a very well-kept park that also features a roped off swimming area and a rocky beach. However there is no boat ramp here for launching a boat.
Whitefish Lake is a very popular spot in the summertime for both locals and visitors to relax, play and enjoy. The lake is large enough to accommodate many different forms of activity without being bothered by others who are out enjoying the lake. Water skiing, fishing, fly boarding, swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, jet-skiing and more are all popular summertime activities to enjoy on the lake.
You will only be about 5 minutes away from city beach when you stay at the Cabins at Whitefish. And if you would rather visit the lake via the Whitefish Lake State Park, you are within an easy bicycle ride or walk from the waters edge.
